RESPONSE:

Let's take a closer look at these interesting questions on Vietnam Veterans.

1. Identify vulnerable population of Vietnam veterans

Most literature refers to Vietnam veterans as vulnerable who have a traumatic brain injury. After Vietnam, a vet being "shell-shocked" was the common diagnosis, with today's Iraq and Afghanistan wars; it is traumatic brain injury (TBI). Soldiers have a high risk of sustaining a TBI while defending it. (Source: http://www.braininjurylawblog.com/brain-injury-news-our-mostvulnerable-veterans-need-support.html).

For example, one survey study (1988) found the Vietnam veterans were more likely to suffer from psychological problems, hearing loss and a kind of hepatitis common in Southeast Asia when compared to other soldiers serving elsewhere. The new study is consistent with earlier studies that found more emotional problems and higher rates of suicide and accidental deaths among veterans who served in Vietnam. Vietnam veterans were more likely to experience psychological problems and indulge in substance abuse. About 14 percent of the Vietnam veterans abused alcohol, the study said, as against 9 percent of the other group. Drug use was about the same between the groups, (four-tenths of 1 percent for those who served in Vietnam and one-half of 1 percent for the others) but the study said data suggested that more Vietnam veterans suffered drug-related deaths. Five percent of the Vietnam soldiers exhibited anxiety in tests, as against 3 percent of the other group, and for depression, the difference was 5 percent to 2 percent.
