The Supreme Court is the highest court in the United States. As the highest court of the nation, the Supreme Court interprets the Constitution. In some instances, when laws are challenged as unconstitutional, the Supreme Court hears the case and renders a decision on the case. This can impact American citizens in many ways. The Court could make decisions that can limit or expand the various freedoms and liberties of the American citizen. The Court, as well as interpreting the constitution in regards to individual freedoms of the citizens, also regulates the powers between the legislative and executive branches of the government.
There are numerous examples of famous Supreme Court cases that impacted American citizens. One of these controversial cases is Miranda v. Arizona (1966). In this case an individual named Ernesto Miranda was arrested after being identified as a perpetrator of a crime by the victim. At the time, Miranda was not informed of his Fifth and Sixth Amendment rights. The Fifth Amendment gives citizens the right to not incriminate themselves. The Sixth Amendment gives the defendant the right to legal counsel. Now, when being arrested for a crime, a defendant is read their Miranda Rights. This informs the individual of theirs rights in regards to due process and self-incrimination. If the arresting officer fails to inform the individual of their rights, the case can be dropped.
