    1. Commercial/Colonial competition: the European powers of that time were the Spanish, French, Dutch, Portugues and English. All of these countries at various points from the 1500s-1800s controlled large commericial empires and were major sea powers.

    Columbus was looking for a better route to the Indies. Most explorers were sponsored by Monarchs who had commercial interests and objectives.
