? What are some of the philosophies that influenced Latin America? In what way did they impact the cultures of Latin America?
? What contributions to society did folk and elite caudillos bring to Latin American society?
? What impact did the encroachment of Europeans have upon the New World?

The primary cultural groups in pre-19th century Latin America were the Maya in Mexico and Guatemala, the Aztec in Mexico, the Inca in Peru and the Tupi-Guarani in Brazil and some neighboring countries. These groups had their own philosophies prior to any contact with Europeans. Most of these philosophies were tied to the natural world. The natives believed without exception in the supernatural and their philosophies focused primarily on an effort to learn how to appease the spirits.

During the 16th and 17th centuries, in Latin America, philosophy tended to reinforce medieval ideas. This certainly had an effect on the cultures of Latin America. The Spanish and Portuguese adopted medieval systems of land ownership and relationship between master and servant. The natives were treated little better than serfs and in many cases much worse. As Latin America became aware of new ideas and philosophies in North America and Europe they tended to adopt these but at a much slower pace. For example, thought the concepts of democracy and freedom caught on in America in the late 1700's, it was not until the early to mid 1800's that these caught on in Latin America.
