The year 2020 in reality is not that far in the future. The guidelines that are applicable to
the ethics of healthcare have been in place for a number of years and have remained a standard
for many of the professions. The environment will be the biggest challenge of the future. This
will include an ever changing need for heightened security features for health information.
People will be held to the highest standards of their professional guidelines.
In many cases, there are clear stated guidelines for many professions related to
healthcare. The medical profession has the Hippocratic Oath. Nursing has the standards of the
American Nurses Association for the practice of nurses. Each practice has its own set rules to
abide by in the care of patients. Above all, most healthcare professionals live by the standard "to
do no wrong". Is this always perfect? No it is not because we are humans and humans are not
perfect and we make their own rules as long as it is legal. In most societies, we live by social
norms. These govern our behavior and dictate our laws (Huber, 2013).
The healthcare system does not have a set of legal guidelines that are different from those
governed by the state and federal courts. Any infraction or situation that falls in this area would
go directly into the legal system. The domain of clinical ethics is in the care of clients and
patient. Most organizations have an ethics committee that either meets regularly or when the
