The actual room where the protagonist passes her time is integral. Please note the description: "It was nursery first and then playroom and gymnasium, I should judge; for the windows are barred for little children and there are rings and things in the walls" (163). Thus, the room is symbolic as a nursery and playroom because it reiterates the separation or isolation from her own baby. The bars also suggest her repression.
