Some additional benefits and deterrents to a system of classifying disabilities as defined in IDEA can mean more equitable access to the curricula as well as special services for indentified students. It also ensures that students receive help at school academically as well as socially.
A deterrent, I feel, is that students might also require assistance in extracurricular areas in terms of accommodations, but the IDEA implications are classroom specific.
As you highlight the various perspectives of disabilities, you might also include the behavioral model, cognitive model, constructivist model, diagnostic-remedial model, or the medical model. Because I am not in your precise class, I am unsure which ones are applicable to your studies.
