The principle function of the Patriot Act is to avoid or punish acts of terror within the United States as well as globally. The Patriot Act has reduced the restrictions on police officers and others in law enforcement. Health records, phones, e-mail or other communication devices can now be searched by the authorities if they suspect an act of terror is going to take place. According to the American Health Information Management Association (November 2010) the principle function of the homeland Security Act is to deter terrorists attacks in the United States. This act allows the secretary of homeland security the authority to control and direct investigations that require access to information that will prevent terrorist attacks.
