Released in 1998, the original ISTE NETS for Students ONLY identified skills and knowledge every student needed to succeed in the technology and information environment emerging at the time. It aimed to help students prepare to work, live, and contribute to the social and civic fabric of their communities.

The Standards included the following:
1. Basic Operations and Concepts
a. Students demonstrate a sound understanding of the nature and operation of technology systems.
b. Students are proficient in the use of technology.

2. Social, Ethical, and Human Issues
a. Students understand the ethical, cultural, and societal issues related to technology.
b. Students practice responsible use of technology systems, information, and software.
