1974 marked an important change in our educational system. The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), also known as the Buckley Amendment, was passed. (Jody Feder, 2005) FERPA allows parents to have the right to access their child's educational records and limiting the records to any other parties outside of the educational facility. The Act of 1974, was brought about so parents could monitor the child's information the school used "to make decisions concerning their children." (Jody Feder, 2005) FERPA embodies a beneficial concept of parental involvement. The parents are guarnteed under the protection of FERPA to have access to their child's records until the age of 18, at which time the student must give permission to their parents to have access to their educational records.
