This section of the web site talks about the forces that have caused earth's climate to change. Before 1780, humans had no effect on this process. The causes of climate change were natural, and included variability in the sun's intensity, the earth's orbit, and volcanic activity. These in turn fed into feedback loops that accelerated the changes. These feedback loops involved greenhouse gases and ocean circulation. Earth's climate has experienced many cycles of global cooling and warming. The warm periods tend to be more stable than the cold ones, and the climate change change abruptly from cool to warm and vice versa.
