Several steps have to be followed for a protocol to be accepted as an internet standard. These steps include the transition of the submitted proposal to an internet draft, request for comments, proposed standard, draft standard and finally a standard. The Internet Society is the umbrella organization that includes several other groups including the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), Internet Engineering Steering Group (IESG) and the Internet Architecture Board (IAB).
