    Research Project on Social Needs

    1. What is the Issue? What is the source of your information?

The issues are social needs. The source of information is Maslow's hierarchy of needs. According to Maslow, once the lower level physiological and safety needs are met, higher level needs become important. The first of these higher level needs is social needs. Now social needs are described as a need to interact with others. From the perspective of Maslow, social needs are fulfilled if a person has friendships, is with the family, there are community groups, social groups, feels belonging, and satisfies his need for giving and receiving love. Included in social needs are the need to have romantic attachments, or even being included in churches and religious organizations.

The issue related to social needs is that if social needs are not fulfilled then the person suffers from loneliness, depression, and worries. The social need is a strong need and it is important for people to feel loved and accepted by others. Involvement in groups like book clubs and sports team helps fulfill social needs.

    2. How does it affect the operation of your business? Of a product or service?

Social needs affects the operations of the business for which I work for in several ways. The firm that I work for makes tee-shirts, shirts, and children's clothing. In its communication the firm stresses that wearing the clothes it sells helps build friends. In operations, my firm uses teams around processes. The teams create a feeling of belongingness and satisfy the social needs of the workers. Further, the firm organizes outings and picnics so that the social needs of the employees are satisfied.

There are some negative effects of social need in the operations. There are some workers, like the stock keeper who work in a very isolated place and have little opportunity for interaction. Such employees feel depressed and down. They feel neglected and ostracized.

    3. How does the economy of the U. S. affect the issue?

The weak economy of the US affects the issue in several ways. When there is wage squeeze, and increase in unemployment, the opportunity for socialization decreases. Those who go watch matches avoid them. Those that give and receive gifts avoid such situations. Even those in intimate relationships reduce their interaction to cut expenditure. There is tension in the family because of tight budgets. Friendship suffers because friendly interactions decline. Even meeting in religious groups, professional organizations, and clubs cost money and so are avoided. The result is that a large number of people feel shunned, neglected, and ostracized. The people in general are more prone to loneliness and social anxiety. There is an increase in the cases of clinical depression.

That apart, unemployment and wage squeeze means a problem related to social relationships, the stigma of being unemployed, social isolation and failure in social interaction. The social position of those that have lost jobs suffers because of lack of entitlement, dependency or social exclusion.

    4. How does legislation affect the issue?

The legislation affects the issue in several ways. First, we have the normative social need that is identified in accordance to a norm, there is comparative social need that relates to problems that emerge by comparison, and there is felt need that is related to the perspective of those who have the social need. Now legislation directly addresses social needs in several ways. Consider this the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Title VII, the Civil Rights Act of 1991, the ADEA, and the ADA directly prevent discrimination in recruitment. These laws address the social need for inclusion. The normative standard is maintained by these laws. Comparative social need concerns are addressed by the progressive Income Tax Laws. The rich are taxed at a higher rate. There is a felt needs that company executives should not dupe shareholders, so there is the Sarbanes Oxley Act 2002. Overall, the poor have a strong social need because of lack of entitlement, dependency, or social exclusion, for this there are laws that provide support to the low income people.

    5. What is your personal opinion of the issue?

My personal opinion is that every person has social needs which are satisfied through love, acceptance, and belonging. Normally, a person satisfies her own social need through interactions, friendship, and community groups. The need is taken care of to an extent by the person herself and she moves on to a higher need. In my opinion everyone needs a different level of social need that she fulfills before she moves on to a higher need. Only in exceptional situations like the present economy, or widespread unemployment do problems related to social needs not being fulfilled really become prominent. These need to be studied from situation to situation.
