There is a strong need to establish systems, programs, and processes that improve the safety performance of the industry. There is need for safety sustainability and business performance in the oil and gas industry. Otherwise, the employees suffer from chemical injuries, vehicle injuries, or contact injuries. They may die from confinement or suffocation. The environment may be harmed through biological hazards, physical damage, and toxic waste.
Explore Current Management Practices and Determine if they are Effective
The current management practices in the oil and gas industry include developing a plan for safety management. An external consultant develops this plan. The operational managers who do not trust the plan implement the plan. The implementation is halfhearted. There is no monitoring of the implementation and a large number of incidents often go unreported. It is only when a serious employee injury is reported, a death is reported, or a union takes up safety issues that management undertakes fire-fighting measures. These measures are not effective.
