A router is a more sophisticated network device as compared to switch. A switch simply transfers packets from one device to another. A router does the same thing, but also allows the translation of information between networks.

A switch can be termed as a central component of a single network that connects computers and passes frames between those computers while a router interconnects two or more networks and passes IP traffic among them.

The advantage of Routers is that routers for home networks can join multiple networks while switch is not capable of joining multiple networks or sharing internet connection.
