In any database, data is organized in a hierarchy, which is called as hierarchy of data. At the bottom of the hierarchy, we have the smallest data-storing unit called a bit. A bit is represented by either a 0 (off) or a 1 (on). Bits are grouped to form a byte. A byte is used to represent one character, number, or symbol. Bytes are further grouped into a field, such as a name or date. Related fields are grouped to form a record and related records are grouped to form a file. Finally, related files are organized into a database.
