An expert system is defined as a computer system that emulates the decision-making ability of a human expert. Expert systems are designed to solve complex problems by reasoning about knowledge much like an expert would do, and not by following the procedure of a developer, as is the case in conventional programming. Expert systems are used to assist the decision maker, not to make a certain decision about certain issue.
