I would like to highlight the role and impact of leadership in the team to success of the organization.

The role of leadership in self-managed teams is to give direction, communicate with the organization, and represent the self-managed team's interest. The role of the leader is to give advice, and participate in setting standards of work/objectives. In a self-managed team the leader must monitor the performance, evaluate individual performance, and motivate the team.

Transactional leadership lay emphasis on the transaction between leader and team members, The transactional leader uses rewards, punishments, for improvement of team performance. forms relationship, thrives in stable environment, and encourages existing culture. The transformational leader uses charisma, enthusiasm, and ideals. He is proactive, thrives in unstable environment, and innovates (b). The transactional leader maintains the flow of work, whereas the transformational leader improves his team to a higher level of performance.

Contingency reward system is meant to motivate employees if they achieve identified goals. This system is used by transactional leaders. For example, the salesperson who achieves his target gets a 5% bonus.

The visionary leadership communicates the vision or the ideal state to team members. Such leaders inspire. Exemplary leaders lead by example. in a team the exemplary leader takes up responsibilities and shows how things should be done.

Micro-management means the leader closely observes or controls the work of team members. It is believed that micromanagement has a harmful effect. Upper echelons management means that the leader is primarily concerned with the overall strategy, policy, and providing direction to the team.

The role of strategic leader in a team is to communicate the vision of the organization to the team members and persuade them to follow the vision. The internal factors are the strengths and weaknesses of the team especially with regards to its skills, synergies, and potential. The external factors are the organizational situation, organizational culture, and relationships with other teams.

Executive compensation can be linked to accountability in several ways. The most effective way is to have several criteria for evaluating executive performance. There should not be overemphasis on profits, revenues. Each of these should be a criterion in performance evaluation.
