For anyone in a managerial or supervisory role, I believe it is imperative to be viewed as a leader. In order to achieve this, it is vital to lead by example, continuously showcasing the ability to "walk the walk and talk the talk" (i.e. what is good for my subordinates is good for me). One of the quickest ways to lose credibility as a leader is to live by "do as I say, not as I do." Subordinates often equate this attitude as the manager/supervisor "being above" what is considered appropriate for others. For example, if there was an organization directive to work overtime until a project was completed, and the manager dictates this to their subordinates - yet leaves early, this example will damage morale.
