The defense mechanism that I have seen most frequently is rationalization. When people use rationalization, they provide several (and sometimes more), reasons defending their actions, and they rationalize their reasons to make them justifiable. For purposes of this discussion, we will use two employees, Sue and John. Sue didn't receive a promotion that she wanted. She rationalizes it by saying that the hiring manager in that department is intimated by her knowledge or doesn't like her for whatever number of reasons. Sue then justifies this by saying that these reasons must be true or else she would have been offered the promotion, because it couldn't possibly be her qualifications. The ...
