As students of business and management, most of us are familiar with the work of Abraham Maslow, who presented Maslow's hierarchy of needs as a theory of human motivation. This theory has been widely used by management experts to explain motivational behavior of employees at work and how managers can apply this theory for effective supervision and management of their staff.

In this article we will see how Maslow's hierarchy of needs can be applied in a learning situation and what are it implications in terms of understanding learners' motivation & behavior in the class or in any other learning environment.

According to Maslow, individuals tend to first satisfy their basic or lower order needs, which are also known as, deficiency needs and include such things as food, shelter and safety. Once these needs are met, they seek the fulfillment of higher order needs or growth needs that deal with personal growth and achievements in life. The five levels of needs are listed below:

1. Physiological
2. Safety and security
3. Social and emotional
4. Esteem
5. Self-actualization
