1. What is the role of communication in conflict resolution? How does it contribute to the causation of the conflict and how can it assist with the resolution?
The role of communication in conflict resolution is very important. When communication is scarce, there is conflict (Borchers, 1999). If employees do not communicate with each other when they have a project to complete, certain chaos will be the outcome. When there is a project or task to be accomplished, communication is of the utmost importance. Normally that is why a team leader is chosen for the group. Meetings need to be scheduled and minutes need to be taken. An agenda is key in keeping the group informed of the progress of the project or task as well as a documented trail of what went on in the meetings.
The lack of communication can cause more problems than anything. Employees get confused, don't know what the next step is, tasks get done twice because no one informs anyone else that this task was done, and there is a need for discussion of facts and what needs to be done. Communication can solve those issues. If everyone informs the other of what has been completed and what is going to be happening, then everyone is on the same page.
Formal communication comes in the form of formal memos addressed to the team and the team leader or boss. It will give professional information such as full names, formal titles, and details of the project or task. Informal communication can be done with e-mail, iPods, cell phone, and blackberries. It will not be so formal and may be on a first name basis.
