Select representative samples.

a) In each of the following independent problems, design an unbiased random sampling plan, using an electronic spreadsheet or a random number generator program. The plan should include defining the sampling unit and establishing a numbering system for the population. After the plan has been designed; select the sample using the computer. Assume the sample size is 50 for each of (1) and (4).
(1) Pre-numbered sales invoices in a sales journal where the lowest invoice number is 1 and the highest is 6211.
(2) Pre-numbered bills of lading where the lowest document number is 21926 and the highest is 28511.
(3) Accounts receivable on 10 pages with 60 lines per page except the last page, which has only 36 full lines. Each line has a customer name and an amount receivable.
(4) Pre-numbered invoices in a sales journal where each month starts over with number 1. (Invoices for each month are designated by the month and document number). There is a maximum of 20 pages per month with a total of 185 pages for the year. All pages have 75 invoices except for the last page for each month.

b) Using systematic sampling select the firstg five sample items for populations (1) through (3) from part a, using the random starting points shown. Recall the sample size is 50 in each case.
(1) Invoice #67
(2) Bill of lading # 22011
(3) Page 1, line #8

As the pre-numbered sales invoices start from 1 and reach 6211, I divided 6211 by 50 since we require 50 items. I got 124.22. Then I used a random number generator and generated a random number and got 0.5187. I took the first two digits as the starting point of my sample, so invoice number 51 was the first sales invoice ...
