The purpose of this paper is to distinguish between assurance services, auditing, and attestation services and to provide an example of each. They all are professional services that can be offered by certain accounting firms; however, assurance encompasses attestation and auditing. Auditing is the most common service offered by CPAs with a purpose of ensuring company financial statements are in legal and procedural compliance. Assurance examines information to ensure that it is reliable. Attestation is a written document attesting to the written claim of a third party.
An assurance service is an independent expert service, performed by CPAs or other professionals, that improves the reliability and relevance of information or its perspective for those who have to make decisions (Pallais, 1996).
