Walmart Stores, Inc. is an American public corporation and has the world's largest retailing chain. It is operating its business in 15 countries and has almost 8,500 stores with 55 different names worldwide. One of the main reasons for the success of Walmart stores is its efficient supply chain management practices in the global market (Soderquist, 2005).

Six components of effective supply chain management

Supply chain management is a process of managing all business activities related to the supply chain in order to increase the value of customers and shareholders through optimizing the distribution of goods and services on time to the customers. There are various components of supply chain management in an organization. The six important components are production, transportation, inventory management, supply, location and information (Mentzer, 2001).

Production

Production is the first step in developing goods and services. It is an important component of an effective supply chain. While producing goods and services, the organization should focus on capacity, volume and quality of goods in order to perform supply chain practices effectively, so that the products and services developed by the organization meets customers needs and demands.

Transportation

Transportation is an important aspect in successful supply chain management. While delivering the products and goods, the organization should focus on managing transportation. The organization should find the transportation facilities that take less transportation cost by the organization. Strategic transportation decisions increases the efficiency of supply chain management through delivering products and services to the customers on time.

Location

Location is also a very important component of effective supply chain management. For effective production of goods and services, the organization should select a good location that is very necessary. The organization decides the location for producing goods according to the needs of the market and customer satisfaction. The organization should select a location where the distribution and transportation facilities, other facilities that are necessary for effective production of goods and services are easily available.
