-Financial soundness of the Bank

First and foremost, it's important to recognize that Citibank was one of the most troubled banks prior to the 2008 Great Recession, and as a result of the destructive nature of the bank's operational model during the fall of the housing market, the bank was forced to significantly downsize its operations by selling off over $700 billion of its banking assets and functions. It also created a "bad bank" known as Citi-Holdings that was and is responsible for housing the company's bad assets as well as its unwanted business lines. The initial performance of this "bad bank" was negative but over the past four quarters, it had posted a profit up until 2015, which at the time represented earnings of $163 million in one quarter of that year wherein it had four consecutive profitable quarters during this year.

Despite these positive gains, the bank has been deemed to represent a bigger risk to the global financial system in 2016, which means that the bank is still considered risky and must adhere to strict capital requirements to ensure that if it failed, it would not destabilize the entire Global economy such as it did in 2008 when it's lack of leadership and planning resulted in a total meltdown for the bank. The bank's been capable of successfully responding to its risks as it has continued to commit to ensuring that its expertise and pooling of regional and global liquidities that are managed successfully will separate the bank from its competitors.
