The media has an inordinate amount of influence on how the public perceives any issue as they have the platform that allows them to bombard the public with any message that they put out. Therefore, when the anti-bullying message began to emerge over the last decade, it has been effective in changing the public's perception of an issue that all people either have experienced themselves or know someone who has experienced it or even have engaged in this behavior themselves. The fact is that children can be cruel, and everyone who attended school from grade school until high school has witnessed or experienced bullying. This is why for so long, the issue of bullying was viewed as a "rite" of passage or normal behavior by children, but with increased attention by the media on how bullying negatively impacts children as well as the rash of suicides by children as a result of this behavior, the public has gradually been influenced to change the "kids will be kids" stance to appropriately address this issue. This has been largely due to the media's constant focus and attention on the negative results of this behavior.
