Whistleblowing takes place when an informant notifies an outside authority that events are occurring or have occurred in the organization that involve wrongdoing. Whistleblowing is integral to the study of business ethics. All whistleblowers have made ethical decisions, and used a justifiable ethical framework to make their decisions when they reported the events to a higher authority. Many whistleblowers go right to the SEC in the case of a publicly traded company, and many whistleblowers also have reported to the IRS, the FASB, and other agencies, depending on the events that are taking place, the type of company it is, and where this is happening. When we study whistleblowers, we see the impact that a whistleblower can make. The most famous whistleblower of all times is Sherron Watkins, who blew the whistle at Enron. Ms. Watkins had informed her supervisor of the information she had inadvertently uncovered, but they failed to act.
