The situational leadership theory holds much weight, and has found to be highly effective. It holds that when the leader or leaders are in a group or organization, their leadership style, as suggested, is based on the basic level of maturity within the group. To be successful as a group, the leader must match his or her leadership style with the maturity present. Hersey and Blanchard based their theory on two factors: 1) the leadership style being used, and 2) the maturity of those being led. The leadership styles they developed fell into four basic categories, titled S1, S2, S3, and S4.
