The First Law of Thermodynamics states that energy cannot be created or destroyed. Energy enters a system, let's say your body is the system, some energy is stored and the remainder is converted to heat and moves out.
A pound of fat is 3500 calories. Therefore to burn a pound of fat, you have to burn 3500 calories more than you take in. This is called a caloric deficit. Precaution should be taken, however, not to have calorie intake too low (lee than 1000 calories per day) or it causes your body to store fat to burn for energy.
