In the recent history, it has been debated that the development of Europe between 1500 and 1800 produced a 'system' in the Atlantic. Through this system, the economies of Europe, West Africa and the New World were strongly linked to each other through buying and selling of goods and migration. However, it is suggested by the existing evidence that the impact of such a system in economic terms were insignificant. Rather than making improvements and advancements in the economy, the expansion of the European values and norms, such as private property, monogamy, the nuclear family, free labor and the place of women and children in society was stimulated by the 'Atlantic System'. Early modern Denmark (1500-1800) had undergone through a severe ecological crisis, and it's after effects could be traced even today. One of the most important factors leading to the crisis was increase in population which almost doubled during this period. And the other factor was the creation of a national army financed by taxes. This resulted in a strong growth in the public consumption for civil and military projects as well; including the building of royal castles, construction of a mercantile marine, and of one of the largest navies in Europe. During the first half of the 17th century, crisis could be seen in the landscape because the forests were disappearing and building and construction of ships steadily increased the timber demand. Due to sand drift and soil erosion, many parts of the country laid waste. Also, there were problems with the level of water and many parts were flooded with water.
