The controlling function of management tends to have a negative connotation especially in contemporary society since it is perceived to lack support mechanisms for employees with the entire process seen as one-way. The word control is seen today to have the negative connotation to mean heavy-handed and coercive, with many modern management literature preferring to use the term coordinating rather than controlling which has become the new evolved word to mean controlling.
