In today's competitive and challenging business environment, employees need to be keenly aware of their organizational surroundings and pay close attention to anything that seems "uncommon". When it comes to cutbacks, layoffs, drawdown's, corporate restructuring, workforce reduction, or flat out termination, there are almost always signs leading to that dreadful day. The problem for most employees is their denial as opposed to action (Kissing, 2009). Through being attentive to your business and social surroundings in the office place one can often see signs of trouble early enough to make some corrective changes that may help them avoid what would have been inevitable if they stayed in denial (Kissing, 2009). Here are some of the more common signs that a pink slip may be on its way.

1- No longer in the "loop". Depending on your position in the company, most employees establish a certain status and trust in the workplace. This status leads to a confidence level between the employee and their coworkers, their peers, and their boss. This status of being in the loop then allows them to be privileged to information and gossip going on around the office, often before many others are aware of it. When an employee notices that people aren't discussing things with them any longer, the break room clears out when you enter, and your boss isn't communicating relative information as once was the case, there is a good chance you're in big trouble (Macgillis, 2012).
