The holding in this case was that when a District Court orders parties to proceed to arbitration while dismissing all the claims before it, and the decision is considered final under §16(a)(3),this can be appealed. The Court decided that because the FAA did not explicitly define the meaning of their intent on a final decision in the case with respect to arbitration, the precedent that exists on final decision did not apply in this case. Therefore, the Court did not believe that the petitioners' assertion regarding contention of the phrase "final decision" about their belief that it does not include an order compelling arbitration.
