Technology has made the communication process cheaper and quicker but we ignore more and respond at more superficial levels than before. And there are fewer faces in the process! For example, now you can send conference announcement out for free where formal catalogs were over a dollar each in pre-technology days. So now you can send many more. And the invitations would be responded to quickly, including a compilation of who is coming, what they are brining and everyone else can see the guests responding! You can register online! Of course, there are downsides. We have done more initiating of communications since it is free (copy nearly everyone to the point of being annoying) but ...
