Youth have been expressing themselves and rebelling against authority since pre-historic times. As teenagers grow up they reach a time when they desire more autonomy than society is prepared to willingly give them. At this cultural crossroads young people are forced to choose between either resisting or conforming to the expectations placed on them by society. In this paper we will look at the youth movements that occurred during the 1920's and 1960's and analyze the factors that contributed to them, discuss how youth exhibited their defiance of social norms and also try to determine what role science and technology played in these youth movements.
1. Why were youth rebelling during the 1920's and 1960's? (e.g., wars, cultural restrictions, etc)
There are some interesting parallels between the events leading up youth movements of the 1920's and 1960's. Both eras came on the heels of major wars. The first World War had just come to an end in 1918. The major European powers had been devastated by the war and simply wanted to retreat to their countries and rebuild their societies. In contrast, America had only joined the conflict in April of 1917 and though they played a pivotal role in helping defeat the Germans they did not suffer the catastrophic casualties that the Allied powers did. America emerged from the Great War with an attitude of invincibility, moral authority and a supreme confidence in science and technology.

The youth rebellion of the 1960's was also affected by warfare. Many of those involved in the counter-culture youth movements of the sixties were the children of the veterans of World War II. The veterans had come back to America after the war desperate for a return to normalcy. They desired to leave the terrors of the war behind them and enjoy life with their families.
