    The distinction between race and ethnicity is like an inner/outer mask or costume metaphor to me, as ethnicity can be displayed or hidden, depending on individual preferences, but one's racial identity is always on display. As a result, ethnicity is more encompassing as it's a socially defined category that includes issues such as common language, customs, religious preferences, nationality, history, and other cultural factors.
