Since common methods of self-harm are scratching or biting of the skin, burning the skin, hitting themselves, or piercing their skins with sharp objects, the indicators of self-harm include scars, unexplained cuts/ bruises/ or wounds, and the tendency to keep sharp objects on hand. Other indicators include wearing clothes that cover up the skin, unstable behavior, and feelings of hopelessness. Some common indicators include social withdrawal, bloodstains on bedding/ towels/ tissues, and impulsive behavior.

Causes of self-harm can be genetic, physical, or environmental because of which the signs can be disordered eating, poisoning, or overdosing on drugs. The signs of self-harm include exercising to the point of injury, banging the head or the body against walls, and driving recklessly. An intimate partner can spot self-harm behavior because of the tendency of the victim to have unsafe sex. Other signs include reckless driving, an increase in shame, and low self-esteem.
