1. The role of peer relationships on the development of feeding and eating disorders in adolescence stems from the need of young people from sticking out in the crowd. To conform with peer accepted looks young people develop disordered eating behaviors. Peer pressure, to look in a certain manner, causes eating disorders. There are expectations from peers to look in a specific manner. Peer pressure is too overwhelming to meet these physical standards of beauty. These standards are important for adolescents to reach the beginning stages of puberty. Specifically, students who want to be liked by their friends (peers) often develop disordered eating behaviors to manage their appearance. The process is that young people develop a sense of body satisfaction from watching their friends and peers. This leads to dieting behaviors and bulimic symptoms. These include sudden weight loss, counting calories all the time, and purging. Peer pressure about physical looks occurs through spoken peer pressure, unspoken peer pressure, and negative peer pressure. Also, it is found that most teens with eating disorders learn their behavior from peers who are also suffering from eating disorders. The eating disorders are exacerbated through low self-esteem, lack of confidence, and loss of personal interests.
