When briefly discussing social psychophysiology, including the effects of social cognition in small groups, experts often comment the inter-cognitive nature of groups, especially as they collectively process information. Within small groups, the more similar members seem to be in terms of shared commonalities, goals, and/or personalities, the more active engagement and close their interactions tend to be.

First off, one article does an effective job of defining it and listing the three common types:

Embodying Shared Cognition. (2012). Conference Papers -- International Communication Association, 1-28.

According to the article, shared cognition is defined as "the collective cognitive activity from individual group members where the collective activity has an impact on the overall group goals and activities" (1). Accordingly, three specific types of shared cognition are also named, "including information sharing, transactive memory system, and team mental models" (1).
