Research shows that as an ethnic group in America, African Americans compared to other groups in the United States have different socio-historical, educational, and cultural experiences (e.g., Bradley & Holcomb-McCoy, 2004). The differences related to these factors combine to reflect the world view of African Americans that is unique to them. Historically, African Americans encounter racism in many ways that could affect his or her perspective of counseling. For intstance, as Bradlye & Holcomb-McCoy point out, one challenge related to the expereince of an African American counselor and in relation to his or her world view is the difficulty of having to work in an unwelcome and unfriendly environment. For example, African American Educaiton counselors report incidences of discriminaiton, and encounters such as racial and gender bias that affected and influenced evaluations and/or promotions.
