In my work as a counselor/student I serve as Youth counselor/campus minister in a juvenile detention school center. At the center, I come in contact with young adults who have a number of social and emotional problems. As soon as I began this job, I came to understand the significance of adhering to ethics in counseling. As my training and studies indicated, I found the most pressing concern to be the issue of confidentiality. Some of the heartbroken stories that I heard, often overwhelmed me with the desire to share these horrible stories with someone else. However, in addition to my training as a student counselor, I soon experienced why so much emphasis must be placed on the issue of confidentiality. Confidentiality is focused on ensuring that clients' privacy and rights are protected. The basic rule of confidentiality is that what a client tells you in the delivery of services must be kept in strict confidence. It is one of the first rules of counseling that I learned.

In my dual role I work with other members from various religious organizations and social service agencies who tell another side of these stories. That is the potential harm done when a detainee's personal information may be divulged. That's why I was told that it was so difficult to get them to open up and discuss their problems.
