The Lunas

Sofia Luna is the 7-year-old daughter of Honduran émigrés - Maria Luna,26, and Jamie Luna, 28. Both her parents grew up in Honduras and entered the US illegally but are on their way towards citizenship when the police were called to their home for accusations of domestic violence. Both Maria and Jaime grew up in poor settings were machismo and abuse were rife. Maria was raped as a child and became a teen prostitute prior to entering the US illegally at 18 when she was pregnant and where she found domestic work. She does not know her father and her mother had a string of relationships when she was still living with her. Jamie's family are fervent Catholics. His uncle sexually abused him when he was 6-13 years old and to fight the idea that he was 'gay' as a result of this, he had a string of female sexual partners and often got into fights to prove his masculinity. His gang-member brother almost recruited him to join but his then girlfriend at the time, Maria, was pregnant with their child and he followed her to enter the US. Both admitted to drug abuse in the past even though drug paraphernalia and indications of use were present when the police came. Maria and Jamie have a volatile relationship and they fight often. Maria has expectations of Jamie - to provide and look after their family as she is not working due to Sofia's state - she was born premature and has speech and motor skills delay. Jamie's job instability and her suspicions of Jamie's affairs outside is a cause that motivates Maria's fights with Jamie. Jamie meanwhile values his masculinity and believes that having children is a symbol of his potency according to the culture he grew up in.
