    The research findings are that:

    1) Prereferral intervention can reduce the number of students placed into special education for acting out behaviors when such behaviors are attributed to the effects of a recent parental separation or divorce.
    2) The community agency counselor can play a unique role in assisting schools in helping students cope with issues that impede their education when those issues relate to responses to family dissolution.
    3) Conflict theory (incompatible actions in a given situation) plays a unique role in treating the effects of family dissolution upon school behavior.

    Such findings show that external factors-such as a divorce- can play a major role in children's behavior in school. Consequently, those findings are very important in helping schools become more involved in developing prevention techniques that will assist children with adapting more successful with their life situation when facing parental divorce or separation.
