The approaches to therapy based on the family system perspective is a transactional event where the therapist's function is to help the family find solutions to their problem. The emphasis is on attending to the present as opposed events that happened in the past. For instance, the client's symptoms are linked to the total family's reaction. Therefore, therapeutic strategies are focused on an adjustment or change within the family relationship. The family is conceptualized as an open system that operates in relationships based on rules and structure to avoid potential conflicts. Thus, in terms of therapeutic approaches based on a family intervention, the therapist, whether the involvement is with couples or the family, always treat the clients as a unit.

First, the practitioner must consider all issues in which the clients may be exposed to harm. This includes having members of the family unit listen to the feelings of other members (Margolin, 1982 as cited in Beresoff, 2003). Conceptually, whereas individual therapy deals with the conflict within the individual; family issues exists between people. On the other hand, the counselor must treat persons in the relationship unit as individuals and therefore, information provided by one member cannot be shared with another partner without the other's consent.
