Research indicates that an interest developed regarding mental states and physical behavior that predates to the ancient civilizations of Egypt, Greece, China, and India. In 1879, the first experimental laboratory in psychology was founded in Leipzig by Wilhelm Wundt, which marked a shift of philosophy to a science of psychology (Martin, 2011). Wundt's (1879) study of human thought processes was established to study human thought processes, and is often thought of as the beginning of modern psychology. As an example, cognitive psychology had its foundation in early philosophical beginnings that included studies of logical analysis, rational knowledge and empirical evidence. In another example,
Sigmund Freud's (1900) psychodynamic perspective was based on intrapsychic (mental processes) that meant looking inward to the individual unconscious conflicts to uncover problems that live in the individual's conscious awareness. These psychological perspectives, according to Friedman (2006), were focused on children's developmental focus, and were viewed as paramount in Freudian thinking. Internal process was paramount in Freud's way of thinking. In addition, psychodynamic theories also stressed the importance of early and intrapsychic experiences, Research shows that these theories placed significance on intrapsychic processes that ultimately introduced psychological concepts that included: (a) defense mechanisms, (b) introspective, and (c) projection that would play a large role in the development of other psychological theories such as those of Ego Psychology and Attachment theories (Larsson, 2012). For example, Larsson, points that current psychodynamic theories have shifted away from the Freudian view of libidinal drives and infantile experiences, but remained in use in intervention approaches such as Object relations.
