In my experiences working with clients in a psychological setting, the regulations that are present are there to not only protect the therapist but also to protect the client. Similarly to the laws of medicine and those of the codes of conduct we all live by, the ethical standards are there to ensure all those seeking and giving treatment are doing so in a standardized, protected manner. Some of the regulations do not allow for as much flexibility or "real life" practice as perhaps desired by some but, for the most part, the ethical standards are there as a guide and as with most guides, as long as you are not outright disobeying the ...
