Federalism, the theory of government used by the United States, among others, is defined as two or more governing bodies exercising authority over the same people and territory, such as the U.S. Federal government and individual State governments. This form of government is useful when trying to form a unified country out of diverse component units. Federalism can be divided into two subcategories: Dual Federalism and Cooperative Federalism.

Dual Federalism creates two separate spheres of governance: the federal government and the sub-units. Within their sphere of governance, each is the supreme law of the land.
