1) The Declaration of Independence was adopted by the thirteen American colonies on July 4th, 1776 (now called Independence Day). These colonies were, at the time, at war with Britain. The main purpose of this document is, at it sounds, to declare these states to be independent from Britain, the United States of America.

In the Introduction, the Declaration explains that, by Natural Law, a people can assert political independence if it is reasonable. Then, the preamble justifies revolution when a particular form of government is harming natural rights (the unalienable rights). Thirdly, in the Indictment, the Declaration explains the 'crimes' of the King (Britain's king), which demonstrates why these states are leaving and declaring independence. Lastly, the Declaration denounces British authority and declares independence for the American colonies.
