As it stands, our scientific understanding of the Solar System has changed considerably since humanity has looked to the heavens ... not a whole lot in recent history, but over time, the things we know now are leaps and bounds ahead of what we knew then.

In order to express how our understanding has evolved, a timeline seems to be in order.

Back in the beginning of written history, there really was no recognition of the "solar system". But when we first start seeing the history of our looking to the heavens, everything seemed to be an Earth Centric view ... that is, the Earth was the center of the Universe, and everything else seemed to revolve around it.

In the early 16th Century, Copernicus developed a mathmatically predictive model of a Heliocentric (the sun at the center) solar system from his detailed observations.

Copernicus' 17th Century successors who explored the sky via telescope, Galileo, Kepler, and Newton developed ...
